About the Department
The Department of English is one of the largest, most diverse, and vibrant communities at Lady Shri Ram College for Women. Its focus is on encouraging individual thought and helping students develop into innovative thinkers.
The bachelors degree strengthens the interpretative and expressive skills of the students in an intellectually rigorous and nurturing environment. It equips students with a firm grounding in theoretical knowledge while simultaneously fostering a strong critical and analytical capacity.
The essence of the degree is inter-disciplinary; students will be required and encouraged to read texts beyond the prescribed syllabus, and shall place their readings within the complex historical, philosophical, and sociological web of the respective time periods. Issues such as identity formation, race and gender relations, nationalism, and the politics of language are a small sample of the numerous germane engagements of the course. Amongst the most exciting aspects of the degree for students is the formation of thematic connections with contemporary cultural icons and the surprise of rediscovering classics, favorites, and current bestsellers in an entirely new and remarkable light. The process is supervised by an accomplished, committed, and renowned faculty. The critical insight and communicative skills gained during and after completion of the degree are universally valued and applicable across all disciplines.
The diverse proficiency of the discipline is reflected in the student body: English students are active and visible participants in a comprehensive range of activities in and around college. Many hold leadership positions in collectives such as the Students’ Union, college magazine, performing arts and fine arts societies, placement cell, and more. The Department Union is enthusiastic and creative in its endeavors to serve the department. Alumni of the course have gone on to pursue successful careers in academics, media, writing and publishing, performing arts, fine arts, law, business and management, and the civil services.
