The Literary Theory: Liberal Humanism
By Dr. Madhu Grover
On the 4th of September, Jabberwock hosted its second lecture in the Literary Theory Series: Liberal Humanism, delivered by Dr. Madhu Grover.
Dr. Grover delivered a fascinating lecture on the onset of the literary movement of Liberal Humanism, explaining its onset while tracing its growth over relevant time periods. She painted a colourful picture of the historical context that surrounded and informed the tenets of Liberal Humanism before invoking the works of relevant critics.
Dr. Grover was able to use the proverbial red thread across the drawing board for Liberal Humanism and cited the critical works of recognizable names like Aristotle and Shelley, moving across time and space with her lecture. Truth is provisional and meaning is contingent- students moved ahead in their understanding of Literary Theory and criticism in the early hours of the morning.
In placing the subject within the text, and the text within history; liberal humanism reveals itself.
